Super Eagles Resolve Bonus Dispute, Depart for Marrakech Ahead of Algeria Quarter-Final
January 8, 2026
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have put a brewing bonus crisis behind them, clearing the air just in time for their high-stakes AFCON 2025 quarter-final against Algeria. The team, fresh off a dominant Round of 16 victory, threatened to boycott training and travel over unpaid win bonuses but reached a resolution with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), ensuring focus shifts back to the pitch.
The Dispute: A Familiar Headache
The issue stemmed from unpaid bonuses for four tournament wins: group-stage triumphs over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, plus the 4-0 thrashing of Mozambique in the last 16. Players and coaching staff, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, reportedly refused to train or board the flight to Marrakech—venue for Saturday’s clash—unless payments were processed. This echoed long-standing payment woes in Nigerian football, with similar threats plaguing past campaigns.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau confirmed the resolution to ESPN: “The players were shown the documents that their payments had been processed, and they trained today, so there is no problem there.” A source explained delays were due to Nigerian laws prohibiting cash transport, especially foreign currency, with the Central Bank of Nigeria handling transfers (which can take up to seven days). The Federal Government also stepped in, clearing group-stage bonuses to avert disruption.
On the Move: Departure Confirmed
With the matter settled, the Super Eagles departed Fez for Marrakech this afternoon, as captured in videos shared on X. The National Sports Commission (NSC) echoed the all-clear, emphasizing the team’s readiness for the January 10 showdown.
Under coach Éric Chelle, Nigeria has been flawless so far, topping Group C with maximum points and advancing emphatically. Algeria, however, poses a tough test—the Desert Foxes boast a strong squad and home-continent advantage in Morocco.
Fan Reactions: Relief and Frustration
Social media erupted with a mix of sighs of relief and calls for systemic fixes. One X user quipped, “Focus on the game, not the bonuses,” while others slammed the NFF: “This isn’t the first time—get it together!” The timely intervention has fans hopeful for a deep run, with stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in top form.
As the Super Eagles aim for a fourth AFCON title, this off-field drama serves as a reminder of administrative hurdles. But with payments en route and the team en route, all eyes are on Marrakech.
