Digital Violence Is Real Violence” — Princess Olaloko Leads WRICAD Campaign Against Online Abuse of Women
….Ejigbo LCDA Vice Chairman, CDC Secretary, Comrade Ijaoba Join Call for Action
The Women Rights and Child Advocacy (WRICAD) has raised serious concern over the rising cases of digital violence against women and girls, describing online abuse as a dangerous form of violence that must be confronted with urgency.
The advocacy was made during an awareness outreach in Ejigbo, Lagos, to mark the International Day to End Domestic and Sexual Violence Against Women.
Digital Abuse Is Not Virtual, It Is Real
Speaking at the event, Princess Fauziyyah Olaloko, Chairperson of WRICAD, emphasized that digital violence is as harmful as physical violence, urging women to speak up and protect themselves against online threats.
“Many people think violence only happens when someone is beaten. But today, violence enters homes through phones and the internet. That is why our message is clear: Digital violence is real violence,” she said.
Princess Olaloko highlighted common forms of digital abuse including cyberstalking, online harassment, impersonation, threats, and the non-consensual sharing of private images, noting that although such abuse may not leave physical scars, it causes deep emotional and psychological harm.
“Threatening messages, fear-inducing WhatsApp chats, misuse of private pictures, and constant online monitoring cause sleepless nights, shame, anxiety, and trauma. This pain is violence,” she added.
She encouraged victims to report online threats, avoid sharing personal information, and guide children on responsible phone and internet use.
“If anyone threatens you online, report it. If messages make you afraid, do not keep quiet. If your child uses a phone, guide them. Watch what they do online. You have rights and you can seek help,” she advised.
Princess Olaloko also stressed the importance of women standing together, noting that collective action strengthens communities.
“When women stand together, the entire community becomes stronger. Do not shame victims. Help them speak up and know they are not alone. Today’s outreach is a message of hope — your safety and dignity matter, online and offline.”
She acknowledged WRICAD’s partners and supporters, including Ejigbo LCDA, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ejigbo Chapter, and market leaders in the community.
“Digital Violence Is a Growing Crime” — Comrade Ijaoba
Delivering the keynote address, Comrade Sulaiman Ijaoba warned that technological advancement has created a new dimension of violence, particularly against women and girls.
He revealed that 45% of women have experienced cyberstalking, while 10.6% have been victims of doxing, exposing them to serious safety risks.
“Digital violence is not a joke. It destroys confidence, leaves deep emotional scars, and often follows victims into their physical lives,” he said.
He cited a 2025 report showing that 9 in 10 Nigerian children face at least one form of online risk, including cyberbullying, sexual exploitation, scams, and unsolicited sexual content.
“About 58% of online harms target women, revealing the gendered nature of digital violence. Abuse no longer happens only behind closed doors. Phones meant to empower have become tools of intimidation,” he stated.
Comrade Ijaoba called for stronger awareness, safe reporting channels, and public support for survivors.
“Online Abuse Rising Faster Than Physical Violence” — Ejigbo Vice Chairman
The Vice Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, Hon. Abimbola Ike, represented by her Personal Assistant, Mrs. Faith, described the surge in digital violence as more alarming than traditional forms of gender-based violence.
She disclosed that digital abuse has risen by over 45%, exposing women and girls to cyberbullying, blackmail, humiliation, and persistent online threats.
“These are not abstract concerns. They are real experiences. Online abuse does not end, it follows victims into their homes, workplaces, and private lives,” she said.
She commended WRICAD for educating women and girls, stressing that online abuse is not ‘less serious’ or ‘just words,’ but a violation of dignity and safety.
“Treat Digital Violence Like Physical Violence” — CDC Secretary
In her goodwill message, the Secretary to the Community Development Committee (CDC), Ejigbo LCDA, Barrister Abimbola Olawale, called for stronger collective action to combat digital violence.
She warned that abuse against women and girls remains a serious human rights issue, urging the public to report incidents, challenge harmful norms, and support safer environments at home, work, and online.
“Digital abuse must be treated with the same seriousness as physical violence,” she said.
Calls for Action Beyond Awareness
Other goodwill messages were delivered by:
•Hon. Ifatumise Adedoyin Adefioye, Councillor, Ailegun Ward (represented by Mrs. DaSilva)
•Hon. Rukayat Olabisi Muritala, Councillor, Oke-Afa Ward (represented by Comrade AbdulRahman Alugo)
•Engr. Sunday Al-Imran, Deputy Coordinator, NYCN
A WRICAD member, Hassan Adijat, thanked the organizers and urged the government to move “from awareness to action” to build a society rooted in dignity, safety, and equality.
The event ended with a strong call to action, urging individuals, communities, and authorities to work together to end digital violence and promote online safety for women and children.
