…..As WRICAD Leads Community Action Against Digital Abuse in Ejigbo, Lagos

Women Rights and Child Advocacy (WRICAD) will host its community outreach in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Domestic Violence on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, at Oba Moruff Ojon Modern Market, Ejigbo, Lagos. This year’s campaign focuses on the rising threat of digital violence — a growing but often overlooked form of abuse affecting women, children, and young people across communities.

In a major show of support, the Vice Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, Honourable Abimbola Nicholas Ike, and the General Secretary of the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ejigbo LCDA, Barrister Abimbola Olawale, will be in attendance to grace the occasion. Their presence underscores the local government’s commitment to strengthening community awareness and collaborative action against all forms of domestic and digital abuse.

While domestic violence is frequently associated with physical harm, WRICAD notes a troubling increase in cases where abuse is carried out through mobile devices and online platforms. Because the signs are not always visible, many victims endure these violations silently. Reports increasingly include threats, intimidation, persistent digital tracking, exposure of private information, and manipulative online behaviour that continues even from a distance. These acts leave lasting emotional scars and shape how victims navigate everyday life.

The Chairperson of WRICAD, Princess Olaloko Fauziyyah, explained that digital abuse reflects the changing dynamics of modern communication. According to her, many individuals do not recognise the early warning signs. Some victims are forced to reveal passwords, while others face repeated threats on social media or experience humiliation through the public release of personal information intended to silence or control them. In several documented cases, young girls were deceived through online conversations that later became harmful.

Princess Olaloko further highlighted the profound emotional consequences of digital abuse. Victims often suffer loss of self-esteem, social withdrawal, and anxiety. She noted that although technology has expanded opportunities for learning and connection, it has also made it easier for violence to occur without physical proximity or immediate accountability.

WRICAD’s decision to hold the outreach at the bustling Ejigbo market is strategic — allowing the organisation to engage traders, families, parents, and young people who may be experiencing or witnessing digital violence without adequate support. The programme will feature short talks, practical guidance on identifying digital abuse, and testimonies from survivors who have rebuilt their confidence and stability. Volunteers will also offer information on safe digital practices, reporting mechanisms, and available support services.

Princess Olaloko stressed that combating domestic violence requires adapting to today’s realities. “If abuse now happens through digital devices, then awareness and protection must follow the same path. Every individual deserves to feel safe, both offline and online,” she said.

WRICAD encourages residents, youth groups, community leaders, and caregivers to participate in the outreach. The organisation maintains that awareness is the first line of defence and that collective knowledge strengthens community resilience. The presence of local government leaders, including the Ejigbo LCDA Vice Chairman and the CDC Secretary, further reaffirms the community’s united stand against all forms of domestic violence including those perpetrated through a screen.
