Otto Orondaam: Biography of the Founder of Slum2School Africa
Early Life and Education
Otto Orondaam was born and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, to parents in the medical field. Growing up in a family with a healthcare background, he initially pursued a similar path. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt. Later, he advanced his leadership and policy skills through prestigious fellowships, including programs at Harvard Kennedy School, where he received the Erik Yankah Leadership Award, Lucius N. Littauer Fellowship, and Edward S. Mason Fellowship in 2022. His early experiences in Nigeria’s challenging socio-economic landscape fueled his passion for social impact.
Career and Professional Experience
Orondaam began his career in the corporate sector as a medical professional, working comfortably at age 24. However, a pivotal visit to Makoko, Africa’s largest floating slum in Lagos, exposed him to the plight of out-of-school children facing extreme poverty. This encounter shifted his trajectory from corporate work to humanitarian efforts.
He founded Slum2School Africa in 2012 during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year as an intervention to advocate for and improve access to quality education for children in underserved areas. Under his leadership, the organization has grown into one of Africa’s leading volunteer-driven initiatives, supporting over 686,576 children and youths, enrolling 4,009 in school, and addressing needs like fees, uniforms, healthcare, therapy, meals, and family collaboration.
Beyond Slum2School, Orondaam has held various roles:
- Ambassador, Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) (since March 2013): Supports economic and educational programs reaching over 1,000,000 students across Nigeria.
- Training and Development Consultant, LEAP Africa: Mentors teenagers and young students in leadership and social entrepreneurship.
- Program Facilitator, Lagos Business School: Teaches social impact and entrepreneurship to MBA students.
- Judge and Mentor, UNICEF Generation Unlimited Boot Camp: Focuses on science and technology competitions for youth.
- President, AIESEC (2006–2011): Led teams across West Africa, increasing youth exchange opportunities by 250%.
Orondaam pioneered innovations like Nigeria’s first digital learning program with virtual classrooms during the pandemic, community innovation labs teaching coding and robotics, and integrations into public schools for scalable impact.
