Bruno Fernandes Reveals Manchester United Wanted Him to Leave Last Summer
Manchester, UK – December 16, 2025 – Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has dropped a bombshell in a recent interview, claiming the club’s hierarchy actively wanted him to depart Old Trafford last summer amid lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia. The Portuguese midfielder, who has been a key figure for the Red Devils since joining in 2020, expressed his disappointment over what he perceives as a lack of loyalty from the directors.

In a candid conversation with CNN Portugal, Fernandes revealed that United’s board was prepared to cash in on him, prioritizing financial gain over his contributions. “They wanted me to go,” he stated, adding that even if new manager Ruben Amorim wished for him to stay, the club would have allowed his exit if he had expressed a desire to leave. This stance “hurt” him, as he felt it undervalued his loyalty and performances.
The revelation ties back to interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who reportedly offered Fernandes a staggering £700,000 per week—nearly double his current salary at United. He turned down the proposal, emphasizing his commitment to the club despite the tempting deal. Fernandes also disclosed that Al-Hilal had approached him previously in January 2025, but he chose to remain focused on United’s campaign.

Beyond the transfer saga, Fernandes didn’t hold back on his teammates, criticizing those who “don’t value the club as much as they should.” He urged greater accountability within the squad, suggesting that some players lack the passion needed to succeed at United. This comes amid a turbulent season for the team, currently sitting mid-table in the Premier League under Amorim’s leadership.
Fernandes also mentioned receiving advice from former United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who encouraged him to prioritize his career happiness. Despite the frustrations, the 30-year-old reaffirmed his desire to stay and fight for trophies with United, where he has scored 83 goals in 262 appearances.
This interview has sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits, with some viewing it as a damning indictment of United’s management under the INEOS regime. As the January transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen if Fernandes’ future at the club will face further scrutiny.
