Introduction

Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf is a prominent Nigerian Army officer who currently serves as the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is also the traditional ruler of Ilemona in Kwara State, holding the title of Elemona of Ilemona (Oba Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, Fiwadade Ilufemiloye Oyekanmi II). Born into a royal family, Yusuf has balanced a distinguished military career with his hereditary responsibilities. He was appointed ADC in May 2023 and ascended to his traditional throne in July 2024 following the death of his father.

Early Life and Education

Yusuf was born in Ilemona, Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State, to the late Oba Yusuf Omokanye Oyekanmi, the previous Elemona of Ilemona. As a prince, he grew up in a environment steeped in traditional Yoruba culture and leadership.

His educational journey began with an Ordinary National Diploma in Computer Science from the Federal Polytechnic Offa in 2000. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Electrical-Electronics Engineering at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. Yusuf’s military training included attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom from 2004 to 2005, where he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Officers’ Cadre in 2005.

Further specialized training includes:

  • Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Lagos (2006).
  • Young Officer’s Course Infantry at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Kaduna (2007).
  • Tactical Intelligence Officers and Security Investigations courses (2008).
  • International courses in Mali (Military Intelligence Basic Officers Course, 2009), China (Junior Staff Course), Pakistan (Officers Advanced Intelligence Course), Israel (VIP Protection Leadership Training, 2013), Sudan (Joint Information Course and Humanitarian Recovery and Development Unit Course, 2013), Egypt (UN Military Observers Course, 2019), and France (Joint Basic French Courses A1 and A2, 2019).
  • Advanced Command and Staff Course at Shrivenham, UK.
  • Basic Counter Terrorism Training in Kontagora (2013).
  • Commanding Officers Course in Jaji, Kaduna.

Academically, he earned a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from King’s College London in 2018 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Yusuf is multilingual, fluent in Yoruba, Hausa, English, and French.

Military Career

Yusuf joined the Nigerian Army in 2000 and has built a career focused on intelligence, security, and VIP protection. Early roles included serving as Officer in Charge (Technical) for the 119 Intelligence Group in Lagos and Operations Officer at HQ 4 Brigade in Benin City.

He gained experience in the Presidential Villa during President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, where he handled sensitive intelligence and protocol duties. In 2015, he was promoted to Officer Commanding the Presidential Body Guard at the State House in Abuja. By 2017, he served as Staff Officer Grade 1 for the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps (NAIC) and later as Military Assistant to the Chief of Training/Operations at Army Headquarters until 2019.

From 2020 to 2022, Yusuf was posted to the Nigerian Defence Section in Paris, France, as Assistant Director of Intelligence/Security and DDA Librarian. Upon return, he served as a Staff Officer at NAIC Headquarters in Abuja until his appointment as ADC to President-elect Tinubu in April 2023, effective May 1, 2023. He officially assumed the role after Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023.

His career highlights his expertise in military intelligence, counter-terrorism, and international diplomacy.

Traditional Title and Responsibilities

In July 2024, following his father’s passing, Yusuf was appointed and crowned as the Elemona of Ilemona. As a serving military officer, he continues his national duties while appointing regents to manage traditional affairs in Ilemona until his eventual retirement. This dual role exemplifies the intersection of modern Nigerian governance and traditional monarchy.

His full title is His Royal Majesty Oba Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, Fiwadade Ilufemiloye Oyekanmi II. The appointment was confirmed by the Presidency and celebrated widely in Kwara State.

Personal Life

Details on Yusuf’s personal life are limited, but he is known to maintain a low profile outside his professional and traditional roles. He is married and values his royal heritage, often engaging in community and cultural activities. His birthday is celebrated annually, with recent felicitations noted on November 22, 2025, from figures like the Kwara State House of Assembly Speaker and local government officials.

Recent Activities

As of December 2025, Yusuf has been active in both his military and traditional capacities:

  • In November 2025, he hosted the Oloffa of Offa, HRM Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi, at his Abuja residence, strengthening ties between Offa and Ilemona communities.
  • He gifted a Toyota Highlander Limited Edition to the Elerin of Erin-Ile during the latter’s first coronation anniversary in November 2025, represented by Hon. Musa Atoyebi.
  • In October 2025, the Nasirul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) held a prayer session at his palace in Ilemona.
  • During a visit by the Sultan of Sokoto to the Presidential Villa in November 2025, the Sultan playfully referred to Yusuf as “the village chief,” highlighting his dual status in a light-hearted manner.

Yusuf’s profile does not appear to include an official active X (formerly Twitter) account based on searches, though a low-follower account exists under a similar name.

This report reflects information available as of December 14, 2025, showcasing Yusuf as a figure embodying duty, heritage, and service to Nigeria.
