The Awujale Succession Story: From Aspirants to the Voice of the Gods
Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – January 10, 2026 – The succession to the Awujale of Ijebuland throne has been a captivating saga of tradition, rivalry, and legal drama since the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025. After a 65-year reign, the vacancy has drawn over 95 aspirants from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, leading to a process fraught with petitions, cancellations, and calls for adherence to Yoruba customs. As of today, the nomination meeting resumes, marking a pivotal step toward the “voice of the gods”—a reference to the kingmakers’ council and potential Ifa oracle consultation that will guide the final selection.
The Vacancy and Traditional Framework
The Awujale stool fell vacant following Oba Adetona’s death at age 91, ending one of the longest reigns in Yoruba history. Succession in Ijebuland rotates among four ruling houses: Anikilaya, Gbelegbuwa, Fidipote, and Fusengbuwa. It was Fusengbuwa’s turn, with the process governed by the Ogun State Chiefs Law, which requires nomination by the house, screening by kingmakers (Osugbo society), and approval by the state government. The “voice of the gods” often involves Ifa divination to confirm the chosen candidate’s divine favor, ensuring cultural legitimacy.

The Aspirants: A Crowded Field
From August 2025, over 95 princes expressed interest, reflecting intense competition. Notable aspirants include:
- KWAM1 (Wasiu Ayinde Marshal): The Fuji musician claimed lineage from the Jadiara sub-house, submitting forms in early December 2025. He petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun over exclusion and filed a lawsuit (HC3/238/2025) on December 16, alleging procedural flaws. The court dismissed his injunction, and he withdrew the suit on December 22, citing resolved issues.
- Dr. Oluwatoyin Onanuga: A renowned surgeon and one of 94 princes jostling, highlighted for his expertise amid calls for a capable successor.
- Prince Abimbola Onabanjo: Emerged as a frontrunner in some discussions, with social media buzz positioning him as the “new incoming Awujale.”
- Prince Ayodele Osunsanya: A Wall Street expert touted for bringing modern economic insights to Ijebuland’s future.
Other princes from Fusengbuwa petitioned over alleged hijacking attempts, urging respect for traditions.
Disputes and Legal Twists
- Initial Nomination Meeting: Scheduled for December 15, 2025, but attracted controversy with 60+ princes showing interest.
- Government Cancellation (December 18, 2025): Ogun State Government nullified the process due to irregularities and litigation threats, including KWAM1’s suit.

- Resumption Approval: In early January 2026, the government okayed restart, writing to Fusengbuwa to commence nominations on January 12.
The Voice of the Gods: Selection Process
Once nominations conclude (starting today), kingmakers will screen candidates, potentially consulting Ifa oracle—the “voice of the gods”—for divine endorsement. This traditional step ensures the selected Oba has spiritual backing. The final nominee requires governor’s approval.

The saga reflects calls for maintaining rotational order and traditions amid modern pressures.
CivicWire.ng will monitor the nomination meeting and provide updates as the process unfolds.
