Minister Adelabu Assures Nigerians: Power Supply Restoration Expected in 24-48 Hours
Abuja, Nigeria – December 24, 2025 – The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that the recent nationwide drop in electricity supply will be resolved within the next 24 to 48 hours. The disruption, triggered by gas supply constraints due to vandalism and an explosion on critical pipelines, is being addressed urgently through coordinated efforts across the power sector.
Speaking during an emergency stakeholder meeting on Tuesday with representatives from the National Independent System Operator (NISO), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Generation Companies (GENCOs), Distribution Companies (DISCOs), and the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), Adelabu emphasized the government’s commitment to swift restoration.
Cause of the Outage
The power shortfall stems from:
- An explosion on the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline (ELP).
- Acts of vandalism on gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
These incidents severely reduced gas supply to several thermal power plants, leading to a significant decline in national grid generation capacity. NISO confirmed the impact, noting reduced output from gas-fired stations and a consequent shortfall in supply to consumers.
Restoration Timeline and Actions
Stakeholders assured that repairs by NGPTC are nearing completion, with full gas supply resumption expected within 24 to 48 hours. Minister Adelabu directed all agencies to adhere strictly to this timeline and intensify efforts.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu acknowledged the inconvenience to households and businesses, describing the disruption as temporary and directly linked to acute gas shortages.
Long-Term Measures
Beyond immediate fixes, the Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives to:
- Diversify Nigeria’s energy mix.
- Strengthen grid resilience.
- Deploy advanced surveillance technologies to protect critical infrastructure.
He called on communities to report suspicious activities around power and gas facilities, underscoring that infrastructure protection is a shared responsibility.
Adelabu reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to delivering stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity to power homes, industries, and the economy, assuring that this setback will not derail broader objectives.
CivicWire.ng commends the proactive response and urges patience as restoration works progress. We will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates.
