Date of Report: December 28, 2025

Overview: The Eyo Festival, also known as the Adamu Orisha Play, is a unique and revered Yoruba cultural spectacle synonymous with Lagos, Nigeria. Characterized by white-robed masquerades parading through the streets with colorful hats and opambata staffs, it represents ancestral spirits and serves as a profound ritual of remembrance and renewal. Held exclusively on Lagos Island, the festival’s origins blend ancient Yoruba spiritual practices with historical adaptations, evolving from funerary rites to a symbol of Lagosian identity and tourism. This report explores its roots, drawing from oral traditions, historical records, and scholarly insights, while highlighting its enduring significance in modern Nigeria.

Ancient Roots: Ties to Yoruba Spirituality and Iperu-Remo

The Eyo Festival’s origins are deeply embedded in Yoruba cosmology and secret societies, with strong claims tracing it to Iperu-Remo in Ogun State as the “source, cradle, and originator” of Eyo in Nigeria.

Oral histories assert that Eyo was introduced to Lagos from Iperu to entertain an in-law, eventually becoming more prominent in the city. In Iperu, there are five branches of Iga Eyo, each represented by royal houses with symbolic colored caps (e.g., red for Iga Pakerike). This pre-Lagos tradition involved masquerades as spiritual guardians, purifying communities and honoring ancestors.

The festival evolved from ancient rites like the Oro festival, performed in secrecy by indigenous Isale Eko settlers before Awori and Ijebu influences. Unlike Oro, Eyo was public, allowing broader participation and viewing.

Formal Emergence in Lagos: 1854 and Oba Akitoye

The first documented Eyo procession in Lagos occurred on February 20, 1854, during the reign of Oba Akitoye (1841–1845, 1851–1853).

Originally, it escorted the souls of departed kings or chiefs to the afterlife and ushered in new leaders, representing spirits of the dead (“agogoro Eyo” – tall Eyo). The white-clad figures embodied purification and transition, drawing from inner secret societies of Lagos.

Some accounts link its public debut to welcoming Queen Victoria in 1854, transitioning from secretive rituals to open celebrations.

Evolution and Symbolism

  • Masquerades and Groups: Five primary Eyo groups – Adimu (black hat), Laba (red), Oniko (yellow), Ologede (green), and Agere (purple) – lead processions from Idumota to Iga Idunganran palace.
  • Opambata Staff: Symbolic tool for protection and authority.
  • Spiritual Role: Masquerades as ancestral intermediaries, cleansing the land and ensuring prosperity.

Over time, it shifted from strictly funerary to honoring distinguished Lagosians and marking milestones, while retaining sacred elements.

Modern Significance and Rarity

Held infrequently (last in 2017), the 2025 edition on December 27 marked an eight-year return, honoring figures like Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji and former governors. Confined to Lagos Island for tradition and security, it boosts tourism and reinforces cultural identity.

The Eyo Festival remains Lagos’ living heritage – a bridge between ancient Yoruba spirituality and contemporary celebration.
