The Maresca Era: From Dream to Discord

1. The Appointment (Summer 2024)

Enzo Maresca arrived from Leicester City in June 2024, succeeding Mauricio Pochettino.4 He was brought in to implement a specific “positional play” philosophy and was handed a five-year contract (until 2029).5

2. The High Points (2024/25 Season)

• Champions League Return: Maresca successfully guided a young squad to a 4th-place finish in his debut season, restoring the club to Europe’s elite competition.

• Silverware: He secured the UEFA Conference League title and later led Chelsea to victory in the FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025.

• Tactical Identity: Early on, the “Maresca-ball” system drew praise for its control and high-scoring matches, including a 6-2 win over Wolves.

3. The Unraveling (Late 2025)

• Form Slump: After being named Manager of the Month in November 2025, the team’s form collapsed. Chelsea won only one of their last seven Premier League games, dropping from title contention to 5th place.

• The “Worst 48 Hours”: Following a 2-0 win over Everton in mid-December, Maresca delivered a cryptic outburst, claiming he lacked support and had experienced his “worst 48 hours” at the club.¹

• Medical & Board Disputes: Reports emerged of friction regarding player fitness data. Maresca reportedly ignored medical advice to limit the minutes of injury-prone stars like Reece James and Wesley Fofana.

• The “Betrayal”: Chelsea leadership learned that Maresca had allegedly held secret talks with Manchester City and Juventus as early as October, attempting to use the interest as leverage for a better contract.

• The Final Straw: On December 30, 2025, Chelsea drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth. Fans booed Maresca after he substituted Cole Palmer, and the manager skipped his post-match press conference, citing illness. He was sacked on New Year’s Day following “crunch talks.”
