Sydney, Australia – December 15, 2025 – A festive Hanukkah celebration turned into a scene of horror on Sunday evening when two gunmen opened fire at a gathering on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring over 40 others in what authorities have described as an antisemitic terrorist attack. The incident, which occurred on the first night of Hanukkah, has prompted vows from Australian leaders to tighten gun laws and combat rising antisemitism.

The attack unfolded around 7:30 p.m. local time at a public Hanukkah event organized by Chabad Bondi in a small park adjacent to the beach, attended by approximately 1,000 people, including families with children. Witnesses described chaos as the assailants, armed with semi-automatic weapons, targeted the crowd indiscriminately. “It was supposed to be a night of light and joy, but it turned into nightmare,” said one survivor, recounting how beachgoers fled in panic, leaving behind personal belongings.
Police identified the gunmen as a father-son duo: Sajid Akram, 50, who was fatally shot by responding officers at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who was critically injured and remains in hospital custody. The elder Akram, who arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa, held a valid firearms license since 2015 and legally owned six weapons. Investigators found Islamic State flags in their vehicle, leading authorities to classify the shooting as a terrorist act motivated by antisemitism. No other suspects are being sought, though the son’s prior intelligence scrutiny from 2019-2020 for associations with extremists has raised questions about monitoring protocols.
Amid the tragedy, a bystander emerged as a national hero. Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Muslim father of two, tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen, sustaining gunshot wounds to his arm and hand in the process. His actions are credited with saving lives and preventing further casualties. Al-Ahmed underwent successful surgery and may require additional procedures; an online fundraiser for his family has raised over A$1.4 million (about $930,000 USD). “He didn’t hesitate—he just acted,” said his wife in a statement, praising his bravery.

The victims, ranging in age from 10 to 87, reflected the diversity of the Jewish community and visitors at the event. Among those killed were:
- Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, a British-born assistant rabbi and father of five, known for his community service including support for prisoners and the elderly.
- Peter Meagher, a retired policeman and rugby volunteer, who was photographing the event.
- Dan Elkayam, a 28-year-old French national and soccer player working in Sydney.
- Matilda, a 10-year-old primary school student described as joyful and spirited.
- Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who emigrated from Ukraine.
- Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, secretary of Sydney’s Beth Din religious organization.
- Tibor Weitzen, who died shielding his wife from gunfire.
Other victims included Reuven Morrison and a Slovak woman. The injured include two police officers in stable condition.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as “pure evil” and an act of terrorism, convening an emergency national cabinet meeting. The government announced plans to overhaul gun laws—already among the world’s strictest since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre— including limits on the number and types of firearms per license, restrictions to Australian citizens only, and a national firearms register. Additionally, measures to combat antisemitism include a National Hate Crimes Database, enhanced security for Jewish sites, and improved intelligence sharing. Albanese urged solidarity, with the Sydney Opera House lit as a Hanukkah menorah and global vigils held in mourning.
This incident comes amid a sharp rise in antisemitic acts in Australia, with 1,654 incidents reported in the past year—nearly five times the previous average—linked to tensions from Israel’s war in Gaza. Albanese accused Iran of fueling such attacks, following the expulsion of its ambassador in August 2025. Jewish groups have called for stronger protections, criticizing prior government responses.
As investigations continue, the Bondi community has established a makeshift memorial at the pavilion, where mourners left flowers, candles, and messages of hope. CivicWire.ng joins the global community in condemning this act of hatred and extends condolences to the victims’ families.
