Tinubu Nominates Ex-CDS Christopher Musaa as New Defence Minister
Abuja, 2 December 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa to serve as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The announcement follows the resignation of the previous defence minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.
A formal letter conveying Musa’s nomination was submitted to the Senate on Tuesday, marking the next step in the confirmation process.
This decision comes amid heightened national concern over escalating security challenges across Nigeria — including kidnappings, insurgency, and the government’s declaration of a nationwide security emergency
Background: From Chief of Defence Staff to Defence Minister-Designate
General Musa previously served as Nigeria’s 18th Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), a post to which he was appointed in June 2023. His tenure ended in October 2025, when President Tinubu oversaw a major shake-up of the nation’s military leadership structure.
As CDS, Musa had commanded several critical security operations — notably leading counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East under the code-named Operation HADIN KAI. He was also recognized for advocating stronger civil–military cooperation, modernization of defence strategies, and public anti-corruption stances targeting economic sabotage.
Context: Defence Minister’s Resignation and Security Crisis
The predecessor, Badaru Abubakar, tendered his resignation on December 1, citing health reasons. The resignation triggered urgent demand for competent leadership in the Defence Ministry, given Nigeria’s worsening security environment.
In recent weeks, the federal government has declared a national security emergency and announced a sweeping plan to bolster security — including recruitment of additional police officers, deployment of forest guards to vulnerable regions, and expanded protection for schools, religious institutions, and communities under threat.
What This Appointment Signals
The nomination of Musa, a career military officer with deep operational and command experience, may reflect the administration’s intent to give the Defence Ministry a blend of military-savvy leadership and strategic oversight.
Given his previous track record, there are expectations that Musa’s selection could accelerate reforms and coordination across civilian and military security efforts — a critical need in light of rising insecurity nationwide.
The appointment may also be interpreted as part of the broader security reset initiated by President Tinubu, which included redefining command structures within the Armed Forces and reassigning service chiefs.
…..More details are expected as the story unfolds.
