Tragic End: DSP Isah Abdullahi Dies by Suicide Amid Arms Supply Probe in Niger State

In a shocking development, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Isah Abdullahi, also known as Kunkuri, has died in an apparent suicide during an ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of arms and ammunition to bandits in Niger State. The incident occurred on December 16, 2025, at approximately 2:30 pm, in the armoury of the Mobile Police Force (Mopol 12) unit in Minna, where he served as the officer in charge.

According to reports, DSP Abdullahi was under scrutiny following a routine annual audit conducted by detectives from Abuja, which uncovered discrepancies in the armoury’s inventory. Investigators discovered that 13 AK-47 rifles and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition were missing or unaccounted for. The probe escalated when Inspector John Moses, attached to the Niger State Government House in Minna, was arrested and confessed to receiving arms and ammunition from Abdullahi. These were allegedly supplied to bandits and other criminal elements in Erena community, Shiroro Local Government Area, through Moses’ brother, who acted as an intermediary and informant.

Operatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) were involved, transferring suspects to Abuja for further interrogation. DSP Abdullahi was initially arrested on December 15, 2025, and later returned to Minna for a physical audit of the armoury. During the audit, he reportedly brought out boxes that were supposed to contain ammunition but were empty. He then accessed a pistol—taking advantage of the armoury’s electronic control system, which was limited to him—and shot himself in the head, dying instantly on the spot.

The officers accompanying him during the audit were unable to intervene and have since been arrested for negligence, facing an orderly room trial. Additionally, four policemen attached to the deceased have been taken into custody for interrogation at Paiko Road Police Station in Minna. Inspector Moses remains under investigation at the ONSA office in Abuja.

Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, confirmed the incident, stating that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, also verified the details, emphasizing that investigations into the missing weapons and the broader arms supply network are ongoing. A special ONSA team has been deployed to guard the armoury around the clock.

Sources have revealed that DSP Abdullahi owned multiple properties and cars, raising further questions about potential corruption linked to the illegal dealings.

This tragic event underscores the challenges within Nigeria’s security apparatus, particularly regarding internal corruption and arms proliferation to criminal groups. CivicWire.ng will continue to monitor developments in this case.
